Do you remember the first time you saw Peter Mayhew in the Chewbacca costume? Peter Mayhew was the actor who played the Wookiee (yes, that’s how you spell “Wookiee” – it has two “e’s”) showed up with Han Solo, at the Mos Eisley bar. This is before Harrison Ford, the Han Solo actor, turned into the mega star of Indiana Jones fame. He was a nobody, but a swashbuckling smuggler – a space pirate of sorts – and they were meeting with the (sorry to say it) effeminate Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi.
The setting was Mos Eisley, a bar on Tatooine, and the purpose for the meeting was to get Obi Wan and Luke off Tatooine. Luke needed to find out how to rescue his twin sister, Princess Leia, only Luke didn’t know it yet…all the intrigue! As a child, when I first saw the movie, I was hooked.
I didn’t care that Luke’s hair was feathered, nor that Obi Wan seemed to be hiding the full story – I just wanted them off Tatooine and wanted to see some cool space flight. They got their wish – in a battle with Greedo, another bounty hunter (he was no Boba Fett, for sure!), Han Solo barely escaped with his new found cargo.
Some crazy farmer boy, and a hermit…Han didn’t care: the money was good. He was running from Jabba the Hutt, who laid a bounty on his head, and the Imperial Storm Troopers were everywhere. Threats on every side, Chewbacca and Han Solo were nothing more than…well, a galactic taxicab at the moment.
With his native growl, and almost dog-like appearance (Chewbacca’s character was inspired by George Lucas’s dog, by the way), Chewbacca seemed a bit – well, tall! – as well as formidable. Coupled with the droids, R2-D2 and C3P0, Chewbacca seemed to play the role of comedy relief.
In the soap opera of my generation – set in the Outer Rim, with a dark and brooding Imperial Fleet, and Sith Lords Darth Vader and a then unknown Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca provided the comic relief that my personal 5-year-old head needed. I could laugh when this exchange of lines happened:
( Excerpt from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope )
[R2-D2 and Chewbacca are playing the holographic game aboard the Millennium Falcon]
Chewbacca: [Gives an angry-sounding:]
RRrraaaaggggh!
C-3PO, speaking of R2-D2′s move:
He made a fair move. Screaming about it can’t help you.
Han Solo:
Let him have it. It’s not wise to upset a Wookiee.
C-3PO:
But sir, nobody worries about upsetting a droid.
Han Solo:
That’s ’cause droids don’t pull people’s arms out of their sockets when they lose. Wookiees are known to do that.
Chewbacca:
Grrf.
C-3PO:
I see your point, sir. I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the Wookiee win.
As a kid, I loved Chewie, who didn’t? As I grew up, and my love for Star Wars has only grown, I would have given my right arm for this Collector’s edition Chewbacca costume. It’s incredibly faithful to the “real” Wookiee from the movies, minus the growl and height (I’m not Peter Mayhew).
Who doesn’t remember Wookiee from Kashyyyk, Chewbacca? You may not be as tall as Peter Mayhew, who was the 7′ 2″ actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars movies, but this Supreme Edition Chewbacca Costume is made for the serious enthusiast. Typically you can expect to pay $699 USD for this collector’s edition Chewbacca Costume. Through our special link (the picture), you can have this costume at a considerable discount, saving hundreds of dollars.

This costume is sanctioned by Lucas Arts to be an official Star Wars costume, and is made with the best quality products for your comfort and authenticity. The only thing missing would be Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon, but other than that this costume is ready for the serious fan.
Movie history: Peter Mayhew was the main actor wearing the Chewbacca costume in the early movies, and in the chronology of the official movies, “Chewie” as he was named by Han Solo, appeared in Revenge of the Sith “first,” when Anakin was becoming Darth Vader.
He later appeared in Empire Strikes back with the famous smuggler running from Boba Fett, in which Chewie was seen as part mechanic, comic relief, bodyguard and ferocious enemy to the Empire.
Saving both the Millennium Falcon as well as his legion of friends a handful of times in Empire Strikes Back, Chewbacca returned in Return of the Jedi, helping to rescue Han Solo from the carbonite trap set by Boba Fett and Darth Vader in the preceding installment.
After appearing in three hit movies, many fans of the original Star Wars movies grew up wanting an authentic Chewbacca costume. If you want a real “feel” to your Chewbacca outfit or need a boy’s Chewbacca costume, there is one for every budget on our site.
Included with it are the latex gloves, a full suit covered with fur, the “ammo belt” that goes around the shoulder, and a bandolier as well. The mask is comfortable enough to see through and wear all night – so if you are headed to a Star Wars party or Halloween, this Chewbacca costume is the ultimate for anyone serious about their Wookiee authenticity.
